a quick note to tell you
it's never been harder to be a mother
Dear new mum,
This letter is a day late and in the busyness of book tour last week, I forgot to write at all. Apologies and thank you for your understanding.
I’m home now, back to the daily rhythm of school lunches, overflowing washing baskets, a bathroom that could really do with a good scrub but which I’ll leave for another day.
There is comfort here in the mundane even though the relentlessness of it can feel frustrating. I always come back to this truth: being comforted by what is necessary in our days, the small things, the ‘nothingness’ of them.
For now, here’s two interviews you may want to listen to that focus on our brain, our nervous system and practical tips for navigating the overwhelm of modern motherhood. In al my research on perinatal health over the past few years, every mental health specialist, every GP and midwife shared the same piece of information with me: it’s never been harder to be a mother. We can know this and then move forward with a little more self-compassion and the extra incentive to care for ourselves in meaningful ways.
I adore Courtney Adamo and the lovely conversation we shared here…
And for a chat specifically about a mother’s nervous system and practical ways to make space and breathe a little deeper in amongst the chaos of motherhood, listen to me on Beyond the Bump podcast.
Lastly, if you have any requests for specific topics that you want me to discuss here, please leave a comment below.
Till next week, take care x
